about

This album covers some of the popular music composed between 1925 and 1952, years spanning the Great Depression and the Second World War. Many enduring songs are from these years of human suffering and upheaval. Some sad songs, some wistful, many of them happy and optimistic. Being the music my parents listened to and sang, these are melodies and words I grew up with. Our home piano stool had some of these tunes in sheet music, most included ukulele accompaniment to the piano part. The piano has far greater range, the ukulele is cheaper, more portable, and easier to begin learning. The ukulele can also be as expressive as a player want to make it. That realisation prompted my solo vocal/ukulele selection of swing era favourites. All parts were played on a Kala K-CEM concert ukulele. Recording and mixing by Darren Watson, cover art by Verena Watson. Album recorded June /July 2019 in Wellington NZ.
